Thakkali Rasam - This Rasam is made from tomatoes and tamarind juice. You can make it ready in 20 minutes with below simple recipe.
Make ready Rasam Powder by roasting and grinding together the following: 750g Coriander Seeds (dhaniya), 300g dry red chillis, 500g slit red gram (arhar dal), and 250g black peppercorns(sabut kali mirch), 200g cumin seeds and 10 curry leaves. Mix in 50g of turmeric powder. Store in an airtight container and use as required.
Recipe Ingredients
* Tomatoes (chopped) - 2 * Tamarind (imli) - 1 * Rasam Powder - 3 gms * Cooking Oil - 1 tsp * Asafoetida (hing) - A Pinch * Slit Red Gram (Arhar Dal), cooked - 2 tbsp * Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp * Green Chillies - 1 to 2 * Green Coriander (chopped) - hand full * Salt to taste
Preparation
First soak tamarind (Imli - lemon size) in 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. Take it out and squeeze out the tamarind juice and boil the juice with another cup of water.
Add hing, rasam powder and salt and mix well. Add the tomatoes and bring the mixture to the boil till the raw smell of tamarind disappears.
Add the red gram (cooked in 1 cup of water in the pressure cooker) along with the water it is cooked in. Add more water, if needed, to increase quantity and bring to a boil. Taste and adjust the salt.
Heat the oil in a pan, sauté the mustard seeds and green chillies till the seeds start spluttering. Remove and add to the tomato mixture.
Garnish with green coriander and serve as soup with poppadom or serve with rice.
