Surti Dal with its little sweet taste is very tempting and mostly enjoyed with Basmati Rice. You can use sugar also to cook it but we prefer Jaggery to bring a natural flavour.
* Arhar Dal (Split Red Gram) - 100g * Desi Ghee - 2 tbsp * Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp * Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp * Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp * Asafoetida - a pinch * Green Chillies (cut) - 2 * Tomatoes (cut to small pieces) - 2 * Peanuts (unroasted with skin removed) - 10 * Curry Leaves - 5 to 6 * Lemon Juice - 1 tsp * Jaggery - 1 tbsp * Green Coriander leaves - hand full * Salt to taste
In a kadai(wok) boil arhar dal and the tomatoes in 3 cups of water for 15 minutes till they turn soft. Stir frequently till a smooth consistency is obtained.
Add green chillies, curry leaves, peanuts, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, jaggery and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil.
In a pan heat desi ghee. Once it is hot add mustard seeds and as they start spluttering add asafoetida. Remove from the flame and add this tempering to the cooked dal. Bring the mixture to a boil again and add lemon juice. Mix well.
Garnish with Coriander leaves and serve hot.
